portuguese podengos in Finland 2003

The health inquiry was made in Finland at the spring of 2003 by the Portuguese Podengo association of Finland.
Small smooth-haired podengos:
The reply arrived from 40 small smooth-haired podengos (ssh). That is 18,5% of the registered ssh podengos of Finland (amount of registered ssh podengos by the end of year 2002: 216 pcs).
The middle-age of the ssh podengos whose reply arrived, was 3,5 years. The oldest was 9,5 years old and the youngest 1 year old. There were reply from 22 bitches and 18 males.
Generally their health is good and their character is social/normal but there were also some reserved ssh podengos.
The most common colour of the nose is black but there are some light or dark brown ones, too.
The height at the withers is between 23 –31 cm, the middle-height is 27,0 cm.
The weight is 3,3 – 6,5 kg, middle-weight is 4,6 kg.
The most common illness or trouble is tooth tartar and skin problems. The reason for skin problems thinks to be food allergy but no-one has proved by vet tests.
There have been 3 Legg-perthes diseases and all those podengos have been operated.
Four ssh podengos whose reply arrived have undershot and there are missing tooths with couple of ssh podengos.
The tooth tartar is the problem with 8 ssh podengos and some of them have been at vet as removing it. Some ssh podengos’ milk canine teeth have removed by vet because their haven’t gone away when the permanent teeth came. All of these ssh podengos have the normal scissors bite after removing those milk teeth.
Other appeared diseases or problems (only individual cases):
Some bitches have had problems with coming pregnant. The males are usually eager with bitches and willing to mate.

Small wire-haired podengos:
We got the reply from 29 small wire-haired (swh) podengos. It is 35% of the registered swh podengos of Finland (amount of registered swh podengos by the end of year 2002: 84 pcs).
The middle-age of the swh podengos whose reply arrived, was 5,4 years. The oldest was 11 years old and the youngest ½ year old. There were reply from 16 bitches and 13 males.
Generally their health is good and their character is social or normal but there were also some reserved ones.
The colour of the nose is light with 16 swh podengos and the other have black or dark one.
The height at the withers is between 23,5 –32 cm, the middle-height is 27,6 cm.
The weight is 3,6 – 7 kg, middle-weight is 4,7 kg.
Only one swh podengo has the official eye and knee checking results (both healthy). The knees of one podengo have been operated (patella luxatio) but there are not official knee statement of that podengo’s available.
The most common illness or trouble is tooth tartar and skin problems. There are skin problems with 11 swh podengos. The allergy has proved by vet tests with one podengo.
It has made wide allergy tests with that podengo and they proved the following things to cause the allergy: the pollen of corns (the most liability); soya bean; chicken and turkey.
The skin problems with other podengos thinks to cause by wheat and beef.
The tooth tartar is the problem with 20 swh podengos and most of them have been removed it by vet.
Other appeared diseases or problems (only individual cases):
The males are active with bitches. The most common reason why the male has not been used for breeding has usually been undershot or too near relationship.

Medium-sized wire-haired podengos:
The reply arrived from 5 (3 males, 2 bitches) medium-sized wire-haired (mwh) podengos. It is 35% of the registered mwh podengos of Finland.
The age of the mwh podengos whose reply arrived, was 3-5 years. So the middle-age is 3,7 years.
Generally their health is good and they are social dogs.
The colour of the nose is black or dark brown.
The height at the withers is between 46,5 –55 cm, the middle-height is 50,0 cm.
The weight is 12,5 – 20 kg, middle-weight is 18 kg.
There are not available any official health results from the mwh podengos.
One mwh podengo have had tooth tartar and both of replied bitch have had false pregnancies. The time between the seasons is 6-8 months and the season takes 14-16 days. Two of the replied mwh podengos have been used for breeding.
